Student Society Future Leader Removed Due to Charlie Kirk Comments
The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after losing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed online comments about Charlie Kirk.
The motion against George Abaraonye reached the required super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The controversy began after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while addressing a college in the United States.
According to sources, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The student leader is also reported to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with other members seeming to express approval of the event.
Election Results
The vote of confidence was conducted over the weekend, with results announced on Tuesday.
Official notices showed that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The announcement confirmed that the future president was considered to have resigned in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.
Procedural Disputes
Proceedings were informally suspended early on the previous day after the election official was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.
In a statement, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the vote tally had been halted because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by the student had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Ongoing Dispute
The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.
His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Opponents have said that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an public message to the society on a related program podcast.
The letter criticized the union of becoming a place where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".
The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and confirmed that concerns filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with Kirk at the union in spring.
